Chipmunk To Grey Squirrel. Ground squirrels are small striped mammals native to wooded and open rocky areas. They look similar to chipmunks, but do not have stripes on.
It is in the sciuridae family.
The name may have originally been spelled chitmunk (perhaps from a native american word meaning red squirrel). The sound alerts them, and they will swoop down for it in less than a chipmunk's patience for grey squirrels. Note the stripes on the head, back and tail. Chipmunks are small, striped rodents of the family sciuridae.
